General Information
Sonnema Berenburg is a classic herbal bitter from Friesland, with a solid reputation in Dutch drinking culture. The recipe was developed in 1860 by Fedde Sonnema in Dokkum and is still produced today according to a secret family recipe. The drink is brewed on a base of genever or grain alcohol with a mix of natural herbs. Sonnema distinguishes itself from other Berenburgs by its full-bodied, slightly spicy flavor and higher alcohol content of 30%.

Fun Fact
Although this type of drink originally comes from Amsterdam, it truly became an icon thanks to Fedde Sonnema in Friesland. He put his own spin on the recipe and made Sonnema a brand name. Unlike many other bitters, Berenburg is not a protected designation of origin – meaning that each producer is free to use their own herbal blend. Sonnema is still produced in Bolsward, proudly rooted in Friesland.
