General Information
Van Toor Schelvispekel is the oldest fishers’ drink still sold in the Netherlands. Its origin dates back to the 17th century, when fishermen from Vlaardingen made their own drink on the North Sea. They exchanged their cod for spices from VOC ships returning from the Indies. The herbs infused into brandy, creating a powerful drink to combat the bitter cold at sea. Distillery Van Toor, active in Vlaardingen since 1883, continues this tradition with an artisanal herbal bitter based on grain alcohol and a secret blend of herbs.

Fun Fact
The name ‘Schelvispekel’ has nothing to do with fish or salt. According to tradition, fishermen invented this name to hide their secret drinking habits on board. When they went down to their boat’s lower deck, they would say at home: “The cod is in the brine.” This way, they could secretly enjoy their herbal bitter. Only later did this drink receive its official name. Van Toor is one of the last distilleries still making this centuries-old fishermen’s drink according to tradition.
