General Information
l’Hospitalet de Gazin is the second wine of the renowned Château Gazin, a historic estate located in the northeastern part of the Pomerol plateau in Bordeaux. The vineyard borders esteemed estates such as Château Pétrus and Lafleur-Gazin, and is situated on a soil of Gunzian gravel with clay and iron-rich layers, ideal for Merlot.
The wine is assembled from Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes come from younger vines and are hand-harvested, vinified in small concrete tanks, and then aged for up to 18 months in oak barrels. Since 1986, l’Hospitalet de Gazin has been produced to offer an accessible and elegant expression of the terroir—while maintaining the class of the château.
The estate has been owned by the Bailliencourt-Courcol family for generations, descending from the old nobility of Artois. Their coat of arms and motto “fut par vertu Courcol” reflect a centuries-old tradition of honor and craftsmanship. The name l’Hospitalet refers to the 12th-century “Hospital de Pomeyrols,” founded by the Knights of Saint-Jean de Jérusalem for pilgrims traveling to Santiago de Compostela.
