General information
Domaine Chapelle de Blagny Blagny 1er Cru ‘Sous le Dos d’Ane’ 2019 comes from a special terroir on the border of Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet. Blagny is one of the least known, but historically most valuable villages of the Côte de Beaune. Only a few hectares here are classified as Premier Cru, and ‘Sous le Dos d’Ane’ is one of them.
The Domaine Chapelle de Blagny operates organically and owns just over 1 hectare in this lieu-dit, which is exclusively planted with old Pinot Noir vines (40–70 years old). Hand-harvested, cold maceration (3–6 days), and spontaneous fermentation are followed by 12 months aging in oak barrels, of which 30% are new, and then 3–6 months in steel tanks for stabilization.
Tasting profile
The wine is deep ruby red.
Nose: bright red fruit, soft wood tones, violets, and warm spices
Taste: precise, light-footed but deep, with subtle tannins, good acidity, and a spicy structure
Finish: elegant, refined, and earthy, with mineral freshness and fine fruit
A light reduction when opening is normal for this style of wine – decanting is recommended to bring out the full character.
Serving advice
Ideal with:
– Wildfowl (pigeon, partridge)
– Veal roast with mushrooms
– Burgundian dishes such as beef bourguignon
– Aged French cheeses
Serve at 16–17°C. Decant upon opening is recommended.
Fun fact
‘Sous le Dos d’Ane’ is one of the rare Premier Crus that is exclusively planted with Pinot Noir in a lieu-dit where Chardonnay is also normally found. Its location above Puligny and Meursault creates a unique microclimate: cool and limestone-rich, with beautiful tension in the wine. Chapelle de Blagny, with roots in an 18th-century monastery, makes wine here as it was made in the past – with minimal intervention and maximum terroir.
