The winery Sopho’s was started a few years ago by Yvo and Sofia. A Georgian-Dutch couple who have settled in Georgia. In the middle of the Kakheti wine region, in the microzone Mukuzani, they bought a piece of vineyard and an adjacent house. The house has now been beautifully renovated, and a lovely wine cellar with qvevris has been built. In the first year, they began making wines in stainless steel (traditional vinification), but in the following wine year, they installed qvevris and started producing wine in the traditional Georgian way. From this come the Rkatsiteli Qvevri and the Saperavi Qvevri.
In addition to this traditional method of winemaking, they also dare to experiment. For example, this harvest year, they are making a wine with the same Rkatsiteli grapes, with 6 months of skin contact with the remnants of pressing Khikhvi grapes.
It quickly became clear that they produce high-quality wines when, at the last IWSC in Georgia, they won no less than 4 (!) bronze medals for their second harvest! But also during the recent Wine Expo in Tbilisi, with its accompanying wine competition, they won no less than 3 medals and a special sommelier award!
This dry red Qvevri wine from the Saperavi grape comes from the microzone Mukuzani. It is produced entirely traditionally with 100% skin contact for 206 days in the qvevri.
A fruity nose of blackberry and cherry, with hints of black tea combined with soft tannins and a rich finish. This wine is still very young and can be stored well, which will further enhance the flavor experience.
Pair this beautiful, powerful wine with a good piece of (grilled) meat or stew, and it will become a true feast!
